brother, the 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev, had posted on his youtube account. we're going to show you that in just a few moments. stand by for that. first, i want to update all of our viewers on the surviving suspect, the younger brother, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. he's still hospitalized in what doctors describe as serious but stable condition. federal officials say he has injuries to his throat. he's unable to speak. he could be charged, though, by federal prosecutors as early as today. right at his hospital bedside. you just heard that from the attorney general of massachusetts, martha coakley, in our interview here in boston. for more, though, on what's going on, let's bring in our crime and justice correspondent joe johns. he's working his sources over at the justice department. the fbi, elsewhere, what are officials telling you, joe, about this proceeding? truly extraordinary proceeding that could happen at the hospital at the suspect's bedside? >> well, wolf, our sources have told us it's possible we could see charges against this suspect today, but there's no guarantee, an
apply it in federal court. >> reporter: there is growing evidence today that his brother, tamerlan tsarnaev had become incredibly radical. this video of a radical jihadist was posted and then removed from his personal youtube channel. he created it in august shortly after an extended visit to russia. there are increasing questions about how the fbi handled its investigation of tamerlan tsarnaev. they did not follow up after that trip to russia last year. the very latest on the investigation from our crime and justice correspondent, mr. joe johns. joe joins us from washington. joe, no charges today for sure. does it have anything to do with the fact that they haven't been able to talk to him. >> that's an interesting question. you are right. it could be soon for the charges. it may be important to say that the authorities are reporting that they are not able to interview the suspect. he is in serious condition at the hospital but important also to say, don, that not is being able to interview a defendant hasn't stopped the feds from filing charges before. it could still happen. that
tamerlan, killed in a shoot-out with police early friday. and with federal charges certain to be filed in the deaths of four people and the wounding of hundreds more, jim, tsarnaev could face the death penalty. >> axelrod: thank you, dean. our john miller is a former assistant director of the s.b.i., and he joins us now. hat are you hearing about the condition of dzhokar tsarnaev? >> reporter: well, he's not in good shape. he lost a lot of blood. he has a bullet wound to what appears to be the back of his neck and another to... to his leg. but that bullet wound is actually pretty intriguing to investigators. of course, he and his brother were in a big shoot-out, but they're saying that that wound to the back of the neck is very possibly a suicide attempt. they say it appears from the wound that he might have stuck a iun in his mouth and fired and hetually just went out the back outhis neck without killing him. that's one of the reasons he's unable to communicate. ut he can understand what they're saying, and they believe dhere's going to be a point where he'll be able to talk to anem.
